Abstract: This interview attempts to unravel the author’s viewpoints on concepts like spatialisation, writing about a place, the politics of representation, and the Western Gaze, with a prime focus on her novel The Inheritance of Loss. The critical questions explore affective spaces in her novel, the politics of appeasing the Western Gaze with a concept of the Oriental, when it comes to The Booker Prize, and the patterns in the aforementioned prize-winning novels and the multiple Indias represented in the books written in English by Indians. While answering, Desai also gets into the nuances of Indian Writing in English, getting received worldwide, and her mother’s (Anita Desai) tryst with the prize.
