Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home: The Graphic Tale of a Queer Icarian Father

Abstract: This article explores the Icarian symbolism in Alison Bechdel’s graphic lesbian memoir, Fun Home. The myth of Icarus is used in order to establish the relationship between the father, Bruce, and his daughter, Alison. The article also delineates how their quest for identity is embedded within this mythical allusion and how Bechdel uses the graphic medium to narrate her coming-of-age, focusing on her journey of coming out of the closet vis-à-vis her father’s closeted homosexuality.
